softwood vs hardwood

What’s the difference between hardwood and softwood?

Whether you’re working on a big building project, some new timber fencing, or just a bit of DIY at home, choosing the right timber is an important first step to making your project successful and long-lasting. One of the questions we hear all the time at Sherman & Young is: what’s the difference between hardwood and softwood? And more importantly, which one should you go for?

It might sound like an easy question, but it’s not just about how hard or soft the wood feels. The difference actually comes down to how the trees grow, how the timber behaves, and what it’s best used for. Knowing this makes it easier to pick the right timber for your project, which can save you time and money!

What actually makes timber hardwood or softwood?

The names can be a bit misleading because it isn’t called hardwood because it’s harder than softwood. Instead, the terms refer to the type of tree the timber comes from. Hardwood is sourced from deciduous trees that lose their leaves every year, like oak, ash and beech trees. These trees grow more slowly, which gives the timber a denser structure and a rich, attractive grain. That density usually translates into extra strength and durability, making hardwood ideal for long-lasting or high-end projects like furniture.

Softwood, on the other hand, comes from evergreen trees like pine, spruce and fir. These trees grow faster, producing lighter, less dense timber that’s generally easier to handle and more affordable. That’s why softwood is often the go-to choice for construction and outdoor projects, especially when budgets and deadlines are tight.

When should you choose hardwood?

Hardwood is the top choice for projects that require a strong, durable, and attractive finish because the trees grow more slowly, and the timber is tougher and more resistant to damage over time. That makes it ideal for areas where both appearance and performance are essential, such as internal joinery, stairs, doors, and flooring.

Here at Sherman & Young, we offer a wide selection of quality kiln-dried hardwoods, including European oak, American oak, ash, beech and sapele. We take great care in choosing hardwoods that offer both natural beauty, are reliable to work with and built to last!

When is softwood the better option?

Softwood is often the more practical choice when you’re working on a bigger project or need something versatile and cost-effective. It’s much easier to cut and shape than hardwood, and its affordability means it’s great when you’re working with large volumes or need to move quickly. Treated softwood can be surprisingly strong, and when used correctly, it can last for years – even in demanding outdoor settings.

We also supply a full range of softwood timbers, including redwood and whitewood, as well as treated softwood sleepers that are pressure-treated for long-term weather resistance. So, if you’re building a shed, putting up some timber fencing, or laying timber decking, softwood is a smart, sustainable option that won’t let you down.

How do you decide which timber is right for your project?

The best way to choose your timber is to think about what it needs to do. If your project is all about visual impact or long-term performance, hardwood is probably the better bet. If you need something practical, quick, or budget-friendly, softwood is often the best option. For outdoor projects, softwood is typically treated to handle weather conditions. However, if you want a material that is more naturally resistant to the weather, hardwoods like Sapele are excellent alternatives.
